How to handle engine oil in the coolant of a Caterpillar 320e excavator



Possible causes

Recommended actions

Follow the steps listed above in order.

Troubleshooting and troubleshooting test steps:

1. Engine oil cooler

A. Drain the coolant from the cooling system. Drain the lubricating oil from the engine oil cooler. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for more information.

B. Check the engine oil cooler for leaks. Refer to System Operation, Testing and Adjustment, “Cooling System” for the correct procedure.

Result: A leak was found in the engine oil cooler.

Repair: Install a new oil cooler. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, “Engine Oil Cooler – Removal” and Disassembly and Assembly, “Engine Oil Cooler – Installation” for the correct procedure.

Flush the cooling system. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct procedure. Refill the cooling system with the appropriate coolant. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for recommended coolant and capacity.

After repairing the leak, refill the engine with the correct specification engine oil. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for correct oil capacity and viscosity.

Result: No leak was found in the engine oil cooler.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Cylinder Head Gasket A. Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, “Cylinder Head – Removal”.

B. Inspect the cylinder head gasket for damage and any signs of leakage.

Result: The cylinder head gasket showed no signs of damage or leakage.

Repair: Install a new cylinder head gasket, then install the cylinder head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, “Cylinder Head – Installation”.

Result: The cylinder head gasket showed signs of damage or leakage. Proceed to Test Step 3.

3. Cylinder Head

A. Inspect the cylinder head for cracks. Perform a leak test on the cylinder head. For the correct procedure, see System Operation, Testing and Adjustment, “Cylinder Head – Inspection”.

Result: A fault was found inside the cylinder head.

Repair: Repair or replace the cylinder head. Install the cylinder head. See Disassembly and Assembly, “Cylinder Head – Installation”.

Result: No fault was found inside the cylinder head. Proceed to test

step 4.

4. Cylinder Block

A. Inspect the upper surface of the cylinder block for signs of wear and leakage.

For the correct procedure, see System Operation, Testing and Adjustment, “Cylinder Block – Inspection”.

Result: A fault was found inside the cylinder block.

Repair: Repair or replace the cylinder block. Inspect the top platen. For the correct inspection procedure, see Reuse and Repair Guidelines.

Result: No fault was found inside the cylinder block.
