Installation Procedures Proper procedures must be used when installing and assembling the DuoCone seal. The slightest error in the assembly or installation of the seal components can result in damage to the DuoCone seal. Refer to Special Instructions, SEHS8364, “Assembly and Installation of Universal Duo-Cone Seals” Refer to Special Instructions, SEHS8484, “Tooling and Technical Data Sheets for Universal DuoCone Seals”

Correct Assembly of Universal DuoCone Seals

  Assembly and installation procedures

Avoid prolonged skin contact with isopropyl alcohol. Try to avoid breathing air in confined spaces and do not smoke. Isopropyl alcohol is flammable. Do not use near open flames, welding operations, or around heated surfaces exceeding 482°C (900°F).

 1. Remove any oil film, dust or other foreign matter from the following components: ◦ Rubber toric ring (2) ◦ Housing ramp (4) ◦ Seal bevel (7) ◦ Housing retaining lip (3) ◦ Seal retaining lip (8) ◦ Seal housing (5)

NOTE: The seals have very sharp edges. Injuries should be avoided by wearing protective gloves. Use the cleaner in Tool (B) or isopropyl alcohol or other approved cleaner. Wipe with a clean, lint-free cloth. All parts should be completely dry before continuing work. NOTE: Before assembling both seals (1) into final position, be careful to prevent oil from contacting the rubber toric ring (2), the housing ramp (4), or the seal ramp (7).

5. Ensure that the lower part of the rubber toric ring (2) is still wet. Using the installation tool (9), press the seal (1) and rubber toric ring (2) straight against the seal housing (5). When pressing down on the smaller diameter toric ring, ensure that you apply sudden and even pressure. Press the rubber toric ring (2) under the housing retaining lip (3) that is part of the seal housing (5). Install the larger diameter rubber toric ring using the following steps: ◦ Push the rubber toric ring over the seal retaining lip on one side. ◦ Use a rubber hammer to tap the installation tool on the opposite side of the rubber toric ring. Keep tapping until the rubber toric ring slides over the housing seal retaining lip.

7. Never adjust the seal (1) by pushing or pulling it. Use the installation tool (9) to press down the seal.

 8. If the seal is not fully wetted or if the housing retaining lip (3) that is part of the seal housing (5) has burrs or fins, the rubber toric ring (2) may have twisted during installation. Misalignment, twisting, and bulging of the rubber toric ring will result in damage to the DuoCone seal. If improper installation is suspected, remove the toric ring from the housing and repeat the installation procedure.

9. Use a lint-free cloth to wipe the face of the seal (6) that is part of the seal (1). No particles should remain on the sealing surface. A small piece of paper towel can separate the face of the seal and cause leakage. Note: The rubber toric ring (2) must not slip on the bevel of the seal (1) or the bevel of the seal housing (5). To prevent slipping, allow sufficient time for the lubricant to evaporate before continuing the procedure. Once the rubber toric ring is properly positioned, it will only roll on the bevel.

 10. Apply a thin coat of clean oil to the entire face of the seal ring on one or both seals. Use a lint-free cloth or brush to distribute the oil evenly. Be careful not to allow the oil to contact the rubber toric ring. Lubricate the seal faces with the same lubricant used in assembly. The oil used in assembly may have dye added to it. Lubricate the seal faces with the same lubricant without the dye.

11. Make sure the two seal housings (5) are properly aligned and concentric. Move the parts carefully and slowly. Note: Do not press the seal and seal housing together suddenly. If the seal parts are pressed together suddenly, it may cause scratching or cracking of the seal parts.

 12. Tighten the bolts when the parts are correctly positioned.
