Troubleshooting high intake manifold air pressure in Caterpillar 320E Excavator AWS

The Electronic Control Module (ECM) monitors the intake manifold air pressure. The following events are associated with high intake manifold air pressure:

Diagnostic fault codes for high intake manifold air pressure:

J1939 Code: 102-16

CDL Code: E1044 (2)

Code description (code description may vary): Engine intake manifold #1 pressure: High – Medium severity (2)

Possible causes

• Turbocharger wastegate valve

• Wastegate valve regulator

Recommended actions

Troubleshooting and troubleshooting test steps:

1. Turbocharger wastegate valve

Note: On engines with a single turbocharger

the wastegate valve is connected to the turbocharger. On engines with a dual turbocharger, the wastegate valve is connected to the high-pressure turbocharger. A. Check the operation of the turbocharger’s wastegate valve.

B. Check the operation of the turbocharger’s wastegate valve actuator. Refer to System Operation, Testing, and Adjustment, “Turbocharger – Inspection”.

Result: The turbocharger wastegate valve may be malfunctioning.

Repair: Disconnect the output link in the wastegate valve actuator from the wastegate valve control lever.

Manually operate the wastegate valve control lever to check if it moves freely throughout its full range.

Check if the output link in the wastegate valve actuator is concave to the retracted position.

Reconnect the output link in the wastegate valve actuator to the wastegate valve control lever.

If the wastegate valve is malfunctioning, replace the turbocharger. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, “Turbocharger – Removal” and Disassembly and Assembly, “Turbocharger – Installation”. Result: The wastegate valve or wastegate valve actuator may be faulty.

Repair: Replace the turbocharger. Please refer to Disassembly and Assembly, “Turbocharger – Removal” and Disassembly and Assembly, “Turbocharger – Installation”.

Result: The wastegate valve and wastegate valve actuator are operating normally.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

Result: There are diagnostic codes related to the wastegate valve regulator.

Repair: Eliminate the cause of any related codes.

Please refer to Troubleshooting, “Diagnostic Codes”.

Result: No diagnostic codes related to the wastegate valve regulator.
